Every legal name change in India, Faridabad included, runs through the same three stages. There is no shortcut, and doing one or two of them does not make the change legal.

Step 1: Make and attest the affidavit

You swear an affidavit on non-judicial stamp paper stating your old name, new name, father's or husband's name, address and the reason for the change. Haryana's affidavit stamp duty is commonly quoted at Rs 10, and since March 2017 the stamp is an e-stamp generated through e-GRAS by a licensed stamp vendor, not a SHCIL counter. The stamp vendors and notaries sit together at the District Court complex in Sector 12 (near the Mini Secretariat). For the Central Gazette a Notary Public attests the affidavit. Step 2: Publish in one newspaper

You publish a short name-change notice in one daily newspaper. The Department of Publication asks for "one of the daily local leading newspapers"; Haryana's service sheet asks for one original newspaper page carrying a public notice not more than 6 months old. Two papers are only a passport-office alternative to a gazette, and with a gazette in hand you do not need them. Order matters: the affidavit always comes first. The newspaper ad and the gazette proforma both copy their details from it, so fix the exact spelling before you sign.

Clearing a common myth

Is There a Gazette Office in Faridabad? What Actually Happens to Your File

Short answer: no, there is no dedicated "Faridabad Gazette Office" that publishes personal name changes, and you will see some websites claim the opposite. One even states the gazette office is "located only in Faridabad." That is wrong, and it sends people hunting for an office that does not exist.

Here is what actually happens. If you use the Central Gazette, your file goes to the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi-110054, where the Gazette of India is published in Part IV. If you use the Haryana State Gazette, it is processed through the Printing & Stationery Department, Haryana, and published in the Haryana Gazette, viewable at egazetteharyana.gov.in. Either way, printing is centralised. There is no counter in Faridabad where your name change gets stamped.

A genuine Faridabad advantage: the Department of Publication is at Civil Lines, behind Delhi Vidhan Sabha metro station, Delhi-110054, with public dealing 10 AM to 1 PM and 2 PM to 4 PM. From Faridabad take the Violet Line to Kashmere Gate and the Yellow Line one stop to Civil Lines or two to Vidhan Sabha (about an hour to Kashmere Gate, Rs 64 from Raja Nahar Singh, then two stops on the Yellow Line). You hand the file in yourself, because the Department accepts applications "submitted personally or sent by Post/Courier only" and expressly not through agents or advocates. So which gazette route should you pick?

Choose the Central Gazette if you need it for a visa or an embassy, if your employer runs background verification from outside Haryana, or if your records span more than one state. Because Faridabad sits inside Delhi NCR and so many residents work and bank across Delhi, this covers a lot of people here.

Choose the Haryana State Gazette if you want a legal deadline (publication within 15 days of the fee), if your records, school board and municipal papers are in Haryana, or if you would rather deal with a Saral Kendra in Faridabad than a post office. If you go the state way, the Printing & Stationery Department's official service sheet sets out a four-step process with a Right to Service deadline. This is it, as published.

Register on saralharyana.gov.in and open "Change of Name" under the Printing & Stationery Department, or hand the application in at an Antyodaya Saral Kendra (Rs 50 service charge). Upload the attested affidavit, the newspaper page, old-name residence proof, your Parivar Pehchan Patra and the signed gazette notice in the department’s specimen wording.

The Publication Branch checks the file and sends approval or rejection by SMS and email against your Saral ID. Common rejection reasons are a mismatch between the affidavit, the notice and the newspaper, or a notice older than 6 months.

One live caveat: the Saral portal’s "Change of Name" listing (shown on Saral as Change of Name in Gazette) has been showing "Service Under Modification". If you see that, check with a Saral Kendra or the Publication Branch, Panchkula, whether applications are being taken before you rely on this route; the service sheet lists both the portal and the Kendra as application channels. Two more details from the official sheet: the service is open to "Citizens of Haryana State and Employees of Haryana Govt", and the designated officer is the Deputy Superintendent, Publication Branch, Panchkula.

Why this matters: almost none of the pages ranking for this topic describes this procedure. They default everyone to the Central Gazette, quote invented state fees, and never mention the 15-day deadline, the Panchkula address or the Magistrate attestation. Ignore the inflated numbers: the "Rs 999" headlines hide the government fee, and the "Rs 7,000 plus" figures are bundled service prices, not government cost. Newspaper choice is the biggest variable, and the Central fee is expressly non-refundable even if the file is rejected (treat the Haryana fee the same way), so match your documents correctly the first time.
